O gentle heart, attend!

Upon a day most fair, when golden Sol did reign o’er azure fields,

A maiden, weary from her distant travels,

Return’d unto her humble dwelling’s gate.

Yet ere her foot had kiss’d the threshold,

There stirr’d the air with such a piteous wail—

Not born of man, but of some subtler kin,

Achoir of grief that clove the tender ear,

Each note a dagger to the soul’s soft breast.

With haste she fled across the hall,

And in her garden—ah! that once did bloom

With thousand blossoms, laughing in the morn—

She found a realm undone.

The flowers, sweet spirits clad in mortal hue,

Lay scatter’d on the ground as soldiers slain,

Their heads bent low, their bodies torn in twain,

Petals like sunder’d wings in battle’s rage.

Alas! the mower’s blade had swept anon,

And in its course, what joy it reap’d for men,

It sow’d in ruin for these gentle sprites.

They, whose days were spun of moon’s cool gaze

And sun’s warm kiss upon the tender stem,

Had dream’d to spend their fleeting summer’s span

In worship of the heavens and in quiet growth.

But lo! their hour was snatch’d—

Perchance a month, a week, a breath of days—

And all their dreams were scatter’d as the chaff.

The maiden knelt, her tears like April rain

Fell mingled with the flowers’ crimson grief.

And in their faint and trembling speech they spake:

“Wearethe children of the wind and dew;

「我们是风与露的孩子;

Our birth was sung by night, our life by dawn.

Yet mortal hand hath shorn the thread too soon,

And we depart unbless’d, our pilgrimage undone.

Her heart was riven as the veil of night,

And so she sought the shrine where Mercy dwells—

The holy seat of Avalokiteśvara,

Whose gaze doth pierce the boundless wheel of life.

With voice that trembled like a candle’s flame,

She ask’d, “O Blessed One, what balm for these

Whose lives are spill’d ere yet the cup was fill’d?”

Then spake the Bodhisattva, robed in light:

“All life is bound upon the loom of Time,

Where birth and death are warp and woof of fate.

Yet thou, with heart attun’d to pity’s chord,

Mayst lift their spirits by the bridge of prayer,

And steer them thence to realms where sorrow sleeps.

Thus, on her knees, she chanted sacred verse,

Each syllable a pearl of purest dew,

Each breath a wind to bear their souls aloft.

And lo! the flowers rose in gleaming streams of gold,

Their forms dissolving into lotus flame,

Till heaven’s vault did close them in its fold.

From that day forth, she vow’d to tell the world:

“One flower holds a universe entire;

一花即是一个完整的宇宙;

One leaf may hide a soul as deep as night.

Despise not what is small, nor cut the thread

Ere it hath woven all its destined tale.
